FAQ's
1. What is the cost of investment in a BURGER KING®?
Depending on the type of restaurant and the investment model, the total amount invested by a franchisee can be between £250k and £800k (not including the cost of land in a free standing location). The toal investments for the 3 main type of restaurants are as follows:
- A 700 sqft food court kiosk starts at £250K plus $40K franchise fee
- A 1000 sqft high street location starts at £450K plus $40K franchise fee
- A 1500 sqft Drive Thru starts at £550K plus $40k franchise fee
The franchisee will need to contribute at least 40% of the capital with business loans funding the rest. We are looking for partners to open a number of units therefore it is a minimum requirement that all successful applicants can show that they have a minimum of £250k in the form of liquid or quickly realisable assets ie cash or shares/stocks.
2. What franchise & royalty fees does Burger King charge?
Currently when a franchise agreement is concluded a single fee of US$40 000 per restaurant is payable. Additionally, the franchisee pays 5% of total sales (plus VAT where applicable) in the form of a royalty contribution, and an additional 5% of total sales (plus VAT where applicable) as a contribution to the national marketing fund.
3. How long is a BURGER KING® franchise agreement?
The standard term is 20 years.
4. I would like to open a restaurant in XY. Is that possible?
Burger King continually updates its listing of target location within towns and cities nationwide. It will first check whether the suggested town can support a BURGER KING® restaurant, and whether there are already BURGER KING® restaurants and indeed target locations. A suitable location will only be sought with the help of the regional Development Manager after the provisional approval of the franchisee. The more flexible the applicant, the easier it will be to find a location.
5. How long does it take between submitting an application and opening a new restaurant?
Approximately 12 months on average. However, this depends on the individual availability of the applicant, geographical flexibility, and timings in respect of the property negotiations.
6. How long and where is the training programme?
Burger King has training facilities throughout the whole of the UK. The new franchisee will have to attend one of our dedicated training centres in the UK to complete the 15 week training programme. Training is provided free of charge however you will need to cover travel and accommodation charges if applicable.
7. I have my own building or plot of land where I would like to operate a BURGER KING® restaurant. Is that possible?
Yes in principle. However the applicant or intended operating company must first submit an application and go through the franchise approval process. In parallel, the location will be assessed in terms of meeting development target strategy and site selection criteria.
8. Can I retain my existing business and still become a BURGER KING® franchisee?
In principle, yes. In fact some of our most successful franchisees used their already successful businesses as a platform to invest in BURGER KING® restaurants. As part of the franchise approval process we would want to establish the compatibility of your existing business with BURGER KING®, and to establish in particular that there is no competitive conflict.
9. What are the chances of success with BURGER KING®?
Burger King Corporation cannot guarantee an applicant success. Whilst we have well established success in franchising, with approximately 90% of restaurants in the UK being franchised, success depends in the majority on the quality of operation, good site location and local market conditions.
